Salutogenesis and Craniosacral Biodynamics Part 2: Sense of Coherence

Today’s Theme: Craniosacral Biodynamics and Salutogenesis (Part 2)

In the previous blog, I explained that salutogenesis is an approach focused on improving health rather than just curing illness.

To achieve better health, holistic care is essential—this includes taking care of your body, mind, environment, and having a sense of purpose. Additionally, in salutogenesis, there is a concept called SOC (Sense of Coherence) that is vital for becoming healthier.

Today, I want to discuss the relationship between SOC and craniosacral biodynamics.

What is SOC? SOC stands for Sense of Coherence. It refers to the feeling that your life is consistent and that you understand, manage, and find meaning in the events of your life. Essentially, it’s when your body, mind, and spirit are aligned, and you feel that your actions and choices are in harmony with your true self.

As I wrote yesterday, true health includes a sense of happiness in your life. It’s not about meeting others’ expectations but finding and practicing your own sense of happiness and fulfillment.

However, in today’s world, maintaining a strong sense of coherence can be challenging:

We spend a lot of time on smartphones and computers, making it hard to find quiet time for self-reflection.
Although society has changed, Japan still has strong social norms, making it difficult to design and live a life that feels truly coherent to oneself.
Logical thinking, rationality, objectivity, and evidence-based approaches are often valued over emotions and feelings, making it harder for some people to fully embrace their inner experiences.
Everyone’s life is unique, and there’s no one right way to live. However, in our modern society, it can be difficult to make authentic choices.

So, how can we develop a strong sense of coherence?

Craniosacral biodynamics, which I practice, helps calm the overactive mind and guides the body into a state where bodily sensations are prioritized. This shift helps align the body, mind, and spirit, making it easier to feel connected to yourself. Additionally, by nurturing bodily awareness, you become more in tune with your emotions, and the quiet moments during a craniosacral session naturally lead to self-reflection.

If you feel like something is missing in your life, or if you feel like you’re wasting your time, you might not be fully experiencing your sense of coherence.

Since we only have one life, it’s important to use it in a way that feels meaningful and satisfying to us. If you’re looking to enhance your sense of coherence and feel more in tune with your life, I recommend trying practices like journaling, meditation, or even craniosacral biodynamics.

To all craniosacral biodynamics practitioners and enthusiasts overseas, let’s exchange information! I offer sessions in Japan, so please feel free to visit my salon if you’re ever in the country.
