The Relationship Between Salutogenesis and Craniosacral Biodynamics: Part 3 – Nurturing a Sense of Coherence from the Body

未分類

This is the third discussion on the relationship between Salutogenesis and Craniosacral Biodynamics.

In Salutogenesis, it is believed that having a “SOC = Sense of Coherence” is essential for being healthy. This refers to a state where your mind and body are aligned, allowing you to make decisions that feel right. This sense of coherence is necessary for health. If you keep doing things that go against your true desires, it can lead to illness.

However, maintaining a sense of coherence in any society can be quite challenging. To develop this sense of coherence, three key components are identified:

  • Comprehensibility: The ability to understand, explain, and predict the reality around you as something consistent.
  • Manageability: The feeling that you are capable of handling the challenges life presents.
  • Meaningfulness: The belief that the problems and stressors you encounter have meaning and can be interpreted in a way that allows you to learn and grow constructively.

Let’s focus on the first component, Comprehensibility. This refers to the ability to grasp what is happening around you and to feel that the reality you perceive is consistent and coherent. Essentially, it is about understanding the “cause-and-effect” relationships in your reality.

This could involve being well-informed about social conditions and accurately analyzing them, or it could relate to understanding things like body constitution or personality types, enabling you to calmly assess your relationships with others. Generally, people believe that the more intelligent and knowledgeable you are, the better your sense of comprehensibility will be.

However, truly grasping reality is not just about accumulating knowledge. It is also crucial that your mind and body are free from distortions in perception or fear, and that they are in a balanced state. So, it’s not just about gaining more knowledge, but also about taking care of your body, which serves as the foundation for your mind.

The Craniosacral Biodynamics work I practice involves gentle touch to the body, allowing it to deeply relax, rest, and calm an overactive sympathetic nervous system. When you’re feeling irritable or anxious, your perspective narrows, making it difficult to accurately perceive reality. But when your body returns to a neutral state, you can see the world around you with greater clarity.

Salutogenesis was initially researched with a focus on the 30% of Jewish survivors of Nazi concentration camps during World War II who did not develop trauma. The question was: “How were they able to live their lives after such extreme experiences without being traumatized?”

Perhaps these individuals were able to hold on to the belief that the situation would change someday, even in the face of such extreme circumstances.

This doesn’t mean that those who didn’t survive were at fault—far from it. When I read Man’s Search for Meaning, which depicts the horrors of the Holocaust, I was deeply moved by its tragic descriptions. Some passages still come back to me vividly, even now. I believe it’s a book that everyone should read.

In today’s world, where war could break out at any time, we need to cultivate both our intellect and our bodies so that we can remain neutral and see things clearly.

I believe that if more people had neutral bodies, there would be more neutral minds, leading to more peaceful individuals overall.
